School of Rock Summary

School of Rock is a music program where students with different musical talents join together in a band. The club at different locations in the school at 3:15 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students can play instruments like guitar, bass, drums, piano or sing. The club also encourages students to try learning to play new instruments, even if they don't have great skills in it going into the club. School of Rock allows students with a passion for music to work together and combine their talents in a band. It is a great way for students to share with each other their personal musical skills and teach one another to explore new instruments. Students can either join one band, several smaller groups or simply work solo. They can finally perform their talents at the Winter Showcase.

Aim: What do you need to know?

1. I'm going to design a logo for the Cooking Club using pictures of healthy foods.

2. What are the easiest and most difficult dishes has the club made? What is the most favored food by the club members? What type of cooking tools do you have access to and utilize? What inspired you to make this club? Do you try different dishes from different cultures?

3. Unique, fun, healthy, quick, simple.

4. I can represent pictures of healthy foods, like vegetables. I can also incorporate simple tools to show how it focuses on quick and easy recipes. I can use typefaces to represent the adjectives used above and describe the names of some example foods they cook.

Summary:
Cooking Club is a club where quick and easy recipes are created for students to practice at home. People can bring their favorite recipes and share it with others so they can experiment with it individually. No actual cooking is done at the club, so it is primarily based on recipes created at home and then shared with the class. The club values healthy cooking, such as fruits and vegetables. It encourages students to experiment with more healthy alternatives of eating by trying fun recipes. It is great for students who already enjoy cooking as well as those with little experience that want to learn simple recipes to start cooking.

3. Yes I think it is appropriate because it's very straightforward and clear letters which makes the purpose very clear to those seeing the sign.

3. I do find it appropriate because it is unique and does a good job attracting customers with its color and font.

3. Yes it is appropriate because the font is very clear and big, so it clearly indicates where the location of the parking lot is.

2. The sign is used for the Walgreens drugstore on 42nd street.
3. I think it is not that appropriate for the purpose of a drugstore/ pharmacy because the font seems much more neat and fancy due to the script style. A more common style, like San Serif, might be better suited for it.

2. The sign is used outside of the college office to represent Franklin & Marshall University.
3. It is appropriate to represent the college Franklin & Marshall is because it is a very old university which fits the Oldstyle font. It is also an interesting font for the purpose of attracting students to the college.

2. The sign is used to indicate the Exit in the school.
3. It is appropriate because it's important for people to clearly see where the Exit to act quickly during an emergency, instead of wasting time trying to read the font.

Letter to Symbol GIF- Reflection Questions

1. The most frustrating aspects of using Gimp were creating transitional layers and using the Gimp Tools. Since there are so many tools, it was difficult for me to pick the correct ones and really utilize all the features. This made the transitional layers especially difficult because I did not know how to use the tools to cover the shapes I had created in previous layers (ex: the outline of the "A" in the middle of my apple). It was also difficult for me make smooth transitions and I often could have added more layers to make each step more clear.

2. After completing the project, the Gimp tools I feel most confident in using shape select tools, the different sizes of paintbrushes and the bucket feel tool because I practiced using these the most in my GIF. I also feel confident creating layers.

3. The Gimp tool I wish I was better at using is the tool to make curved shapes. I never really understood how to create the curves the way I wanted and therefore just avoided the tool all together, but I think using it would have been very helpful in creating shapes in my GIF.

4. Next time I would like to create a Gimp using actual photos but still using the same technique of morphing one shape into something else. I think it would be interesting to see how actual photos would look, versus our drawings, and there would also be a more creative aspect involved in gathering the pictures to tell a story.

Name Design Reflection

1. The design process for the name project begun with us making several sketches of differently designed names. This allowed us to just get all of our ideas on paper and to compare which design we liked the best. Once we found our favorite design, we created a new clean draft of it on separate paper and added anything else we wanted to it. I thought this was a good way to begin the project because we had a lot of freedom on how we wanted our design and also a lot of flexibility to change whatever we wanted. After completing the first actual draft, we moved on to the second draft which reflected exactly how we wanted our final. In this draft we got to make photocopies to test out using sharpies and different colors before the final.  This was also really helpful because I got to try out many different ideas without worrying about having to start a new draft or ruining the one I was working on. Once this draft was approved by Ms. Lee, we created our final.

2. For my name design I used very big and bold letters to represent my outgoing personality. I wanted my name to be very obvious as the focal point to emphasize this. For the font style I made it zigzag lines to show I'm unpredictable and don't have a very composed personality like I thought straight lines would represent. For the outside of the letters I made the edges a little sharper to show I'm very crazy and outgoing on the side but don't immediately give off that impression on the outside. I also used a lot of pink to represent my girly and fun side because I think the neon color looks fun and bubbly.

3. I used the zigzag texture in my name to make it stand out more against the background. I also made the letters surrounding the zigzag's very big and sharp so that it would look bold as the main focal point. I used a lot of pink in the background and less color in my name to make it different than the background.

4. The most difficult part of this project for me was to think of what steps I needed to take to go further with the original design. Even though I thought I was done, I kept getting feedback that I needed to add more to the background or change certain aspects, so it was hard for me to see what needed change. I think this was because I had such a subjective view of my picture that I always preferred things to look a certain way, but when I later understood how important it was to listen to others' critiques.

5. I am definitely satisfied with my project and think it came out much better than I expected. I thought the back designs I chose and the colors went well together. I was worried that by having such different textures and designs would conflict, but I actually thought my name was unified with the background once I added the colors. Although after seeing other people's designs I wish I would've made the font of my name a little more creative, I am overall satisfied that I was able to push myself to create a final piece much more detailed than my original. I am also happy that I listened to other peoples critiques because it really helped me make choices on the colors and how to utilize the space.

6. If I could change one thing, it would be the font I chose for my name. When looking at other peoples more complex designs, I felt like my standard outline for my name was too simple. It made me wish I had chosen a more creative outline to draw attention to my name, and maybe one that wasn't so clear at first glance.

1. I haven't had any exact experience with Graphic Design because I haven't work with electronics to make art. However, I have taken a lot of art classes where we did collages and other abstract work which is somewhat similar to Graphic Design.

2. Graphic Design is valuable to learn because it teaches us better skills when working with computers and allows us to experience a new technique of art. Since we are so used to only creating art on paper, it is important to learn how to transfer that onto a computer and compare the two types of arts. The skills we learn on the computer will also be helpful for future computer related jobs.

3. My favorite font type is called Caflisch Script. 

4. My expectations for this year in Graphic Design is that it's going to be something new and unlike
 classesI have taken before. I think it's going to be a lot of fun to work on the computers and
 keep up with our blogs, and I'm excited to see how everyone's blogs turn out at the end of this year.
